“Let’s declare this day an affirmation of life day”, Dr. Ruth Colbert Barnes said, to a pink packed house at Cafe Nova on October 10 for the 2nd annual “Think Pink Eggs and issue Brunch”. The brunch was presented by the Rare Rose Society, and proceeds of the bunch benefiting the American Cancer Society .
The group heard from several different speakers. Oklahoma native Dr. Ruth Colbert Barnes, a research scientist and CEO of her company the Colbert Group, passionately spoke about complimentary medicine and “mind, body and spirt”.
The goal of complementary medicine is to balance the whole person, physically, mentally, and emotionally, while conventional medicine does its work.
Dr. Colbert Barnes teaches about “dealing with your challenge and managing your stress level, so that the medicine will begin to work.
“Everything you, think and feel manifest it’s in your body. Recharge your body, renew your body and relax your body,” she said.
Dr Ruth Barnes believes that many people are in a constant state of adrenal stress. She is in the process of developing a new clinic in Oklahoma that will focus on the mind body spirt healthy life step.
Barnes told the group, “We have the worst statistic in the country.” She wants to improve that by practicing preventive medicine. She showed the ladies a technique to improve body circulation called “ABC”.
The “ABC” method is where the shape of each letter in the alphabet is drawn with the toes. “I don’t know about you, but I plan to keep my Tina Turner legs” she laughed.
“Check your boobies,” said the host, Terri Gable, with Fox 25 morning news. She went on to say, “I kinda like mine!”
The statistics show one in five women will get breast cancer. According to the American Cancer Society in 2009 close to 200,000 new case of invasive cancer were reported.
Ms. Jacklyn Haynie, a representative from The American Cancer Society said, “The 3rd party events are a major way people can help fight for the cure.” There are several program that The American Cancer Society have available the people are unaware of.
For example, few people know about the “wig room” at The American Cancer Society. This is a room where patience get two free wigs and fitting.
In addition to this, there is also a program called, “Look good feel better”. This provides patients with licensed cosmetologist to come out to the patience home to help them feel more comfortable with the changes there going through.
Also, the American Cancer Society sees a need for transportation. “One of the major items we are raising money for is vans,” said Haynie.
The American cancer society would like to get vans to transport patience to and from treatment. Currently, the society has gas card vouchers for patience traveling more than 50 miles.
“No one should have to choose whether to have treatment or go into debt,” said Haynie.
“The reason we have choose to help raise money for breast cancer is cancer has no color,” said Lavanna Blakes founder of the Rare Rose Society.
The Rare Rose Society is an organization of African American women who are in the entertainment field, up and coming models, singer, etc. who all want to give back to Oklahoma in a big way. The Rare Rose Society raises money for numerous causes like Blue Jean Donations and raising money and items for members going on mission trips. “We want to do our part before we even make it big, ” Said Blakes.
“The part I like best is that is the first event I have been to put on by afro american women for Afro american women,” said Shirley Darrell County commissioner of District 1.
